Objective: For students to better understand the methods of abortion and why it is such a huge issue in the United States.
Homework: Research about when the first abortion took place and who was it and by who.
Mini-Lesson: The class would first research about abortion than split into 2 groups and have a debate on whether abortion should be legal or illegal using facts.

Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy. Many people have different views on the matter of whether it should be legal or illegal. Some people develop an opinion on abortion without knowing the facts or well an adequate amount to make a final judgment. Some even go based on what they believe is more morally correct. Abortion has both its pros and cons. But I am not here to give my personal opinion but to educate you on the matter and help you come to a clear viewpoint on the matter.
Abortion has a very long history and many procedures have been used over the years. One non-surgical procedure used during earlier stages of pregnancy is the Aspiration Abortion Procedure. It is one of the safer more convenient ways to end a pregnancy early. Its rather quick and only takes five minutes. All the doctor really does is insert a tool into the cervix and the work is done. Painless for the women and not the worse way for baby to die right? If you think just because the death of a child is more tolerable if it is not so cruel then that should settle your stomach. There is also the abortion pill. The abortion pill, known as RU486, has been around in the U.S. since the FDA approved it in 2000.
There is also the surgical method of aborting usually done during the later stages of a women’s pregnancy. Here is where things get a little hard-hearted and make the stomach uneasy. One surgical method is suction curettage. In this procedure the women’s cervix is dilated until it is large enough to allow a cannula to be inserted into her uterus. The cannula is a plastic tube that is connected to a vacuum by a flexible hose. The doctor runs the tip of the cannula along the surface of the uterus causing the baby to be dislodged and sucked into the tube, either whole or in pieces.
Told you it could make you feel a little uneasy. Although even the thought of this can be rather disgusting lets discuss the circumstances these women are in or would be in if abortion was ever made illegal. Excuse me just playing “devil’s advocate” but there are billions of things that are illegal that BILLIONS of people still continue to do. So if the woman does not want or is not ready to take care of an infant and wants to abort it she will most likely find a way to do so. Which is rather unsafe for the women to attempt to abort the child herself. Would you rather have a safe way to abort an unborn child or have the women put her health or even her life at risk? What about the young teen who’s future would be jeopardized if she was “blessed” with a baby a year before she is suppose to be heading of to college? Yea I guess it’s a little selfish putting your own well being before someone else’s. Plus 86% of abortions is done out of the sake of convenience. But wait. That means there is another 14% that had a real reason for having to abort. But what reasons could that be? Excuse me for jumping to the worse possible scenario but what if she was raped? Leaving her with a she didn’t want; a baby she was not ready for. Some women cant support a child and for all we know the father is no where to be found. Shouldn’t it be her choice on whether to keep the child or not?
